Koopman interviewed on AV safety

Citylab interviewed Philip Koopman on the safety implications of the fatal Uber crash in Tempe, AZ. News of the crash shocked Koopman. He has invested time in much research to ensure that autonomous vehicles operate safely. But he thinks the crash illuminates the need for stricter regulations on AV testing criteria. Koopman stresses implementing key safety goals, like providing time for driver reaction. Putting an AV onto the road to see how it performs is, to Koopman, “not testing to ensure safety—it’s debugging.” Read the article.
